  • Top 10 thinnest modern smartphones in 2020

The trend for thin smartphones started around 2014 and lasted only a year. Then the world's thinnest smartphone, the Coolpad Ivvi K1 Mini, was introduced. The thickness of its body was only 4.7 mm, excluding the camera. Today, against the background of the popularity of folding devices, this trend is reviving again, because manufacturers simply need to make the device thin, so that when folded it does not seem too massive. If we take the usual form factor, we did not find any extremely interesting options here.

The fact is that earlier manufacturers were able to achieve fineness because of the large frames, the battery in this case could be made very thin and at the same time quite voluminous. Modern compact phones have almost no frames, so the battery can be expanded only by increasing the thickness. And that is why today thin devices can be considered, the thickness of the body does not exceed 8 millimeters. Below is a list of the thinnest modern devices on the market.

    Huawei Mate X - 5.4 mm

    Huawei Mate X - 5.4 mm

This is a folding flagship from Huawei that costs 2290 euros. The phone offers flagship hardware and, in my opinion, the optimal form factor for a foldable device even in comparison with the Galaxy Fold. The device is currently sold only in China, and it can rightly be called the most interesting phone at the beginning of 2020.

Samsung Galaxy Fold - 6.9 mm

Samsung Galaxy Fold - 6.9 mm

Another folding device, but from Samsung. It offers flagship hardware and a large screen. Both the Mate X and Galaxy Fold are more like folding tablets and significantly expand Android's multitasking capabilities.

    Motorola Razr 2019 - 6.9 mm

    Motorola Razr 2019 - 6.9 mm

When the phone first came out, our colleagues from CNET tested the device, according to which the hinge failed after 20 thousand cycles. There was a lot of noise around this test since the method of testing itself did not seem quite objective to many. But the reputation is still damaged. And not so long ago, users began to peel off the protective plastic in the area where the device is folded. Many also complain about poor autonomy and a weak camera. In a word, the phone is quite a failure. But we have not yet touched on the topic of performance and cost.

    Samsung Galaxy Z Flip - 7.2 mm

    Samsung Galaxy Z Flip - 7.2 mm

If the $1,500 Razr doesn't offer decent hardware, then in the case of the Galaxy Z Flip, we're dealing with a good camera, a high-performance processor, an interesting design, and a lower cost of $1,380. Yes, when folded, the thickness of the device's body is 17.3 millimeters, and this is probably its main drawback.

    Huawei nova 5/5 Pro - 7.3 mm

    Huawei nova 5/5 Pro - 7.3 mm

The devices were introduced in 2019 and are the thinnest modern phones on the market with the usual form factor. They are equipped with an OLED screen with a diagonal of 6.39 inches. This model is distinguished by the processor. In Nova 5, this is the Kirin 810, and in Pro, the flagship Kirin 980. In both cases, the battery is capacious at 3500 mAh with a quick charge of 40 W (85% in 30 minutes).

    Meizu 16 - 7.3 mm

    Meizu 16 - 7.3 mm

The smartphone was introduced in 2018 and was once the flagship of Meizu. It is equipped with a 6-inch screen, a 20-MP camera, a Snapdragon 845 processor and a 3010 mAh battery with 24W fast charging.

    Huawei P30 lite / P30 lite New Edition - 7.4 mm

    Huawei P30 lite / P30 lite New Edition - 7.4 mm

These are mid-budget phones. They are equipped with a Kirin 710 processor but differ only in the amount of RAM and internal memory. With a 6.15-inch screen and a 3340 mAh battery, the devices are only 7.4 mm thick. Huawei once again proves that it can make thin devices.

    Huawei nova 4e - 7.4 mm

    Huawei nova 4e - 7.4 mm

Another phone with a thin body is the Nova 4e. Technically and externally, it almost completely repeats the P30 Lite, if you do not take into account the camera at 24 MP. The P30 Lite uses a 48-MP module. Otherwise, they are identical models.

    Motorola Moto Z4 - 7.4 mm

    Motorola Moto Z4 - 7.4 mm

Another Motorola phone that deserves attention. It is equipped with a 6.4-inch screen, a 48-MP camera and a 3600 mAh battery. It's amazing how they managed to fit such a capacious battery in such a thin case.

    Xiaomi Mi 9 SE - 7.5 mm

    Xiaomi Mi 9 SE - 7.5 mm

Well, the last model on the list is the Mi 9 SE. The phone's case is only 7.5 mm thick. it has a 3070 mAh battery and a 5.97-inch super AMOLED screen. Xiaomi mi 9 SE tried to offer consumers a phone that is comparable in size to the iPhone X. And they did it. In addition, the Apple phone has a thicker case of 7.7 mm. the thinnest Apple device is still the iPhone 6 with a thickness of 6.9 millimeters.

What do we have in the end?

From the list above, the most interesting is, of course, Huawei Mate X. the Phone, even when folded, has a case thickness of only 11 millimeters. In this case, the Galaxy Fold in the same state has a thickness of 15.5 millimeters. Razr in the folded state with a thickness of 14 mm stood between Mate X and Fold.

After studying modern devices, we came to the conclusion that Huawei and Samsung focus on the thickness of the case of their devices. The Galaxy A line offers smartphones with a case thickness of less than 8 mm, and the Galaxy S20 even with a modern camera has a thickness of only 7.8 mm.

Nokia and Xiaomi have the worst devices for this parameter. Almost all phones of these companies have a case thickness of 8-9 mm. in the case of Xiaomi, this is due to capacious batteries, but how to justify Nokia phones, we do not know yet.
