  • TCL Showed The Technology of Flexible Screens

Together with low-cost Alcatel smartphones, TCL Communication presented the patented DragonHinge technology for creating devices with flexible screens at Mobile World Congress 2019. The first folding gadgets were also demonstrated.

Shown the apparatus is equipped with a flexible AMOLED screen production CSOT, sister company TCL. They use DragonHinge technology, providing flexibility and opening up new opportunities for the creation of folding devices.

"Thanks to the support of our sister company CSOT, we have the opportunity to demonstrate that TCL is a true innovator and leader in the mobile market of the future. Analyzing the potential of our portfolio of flexible devices, we see excellent prospects for the development of a new direction in the production of our products. However, we do not seek to be the first. It is much more important for us to patiently and consistently approach hardware improvement and at the same time to continue active cooperation with our SOFTWARE partners in order to eventually offer a thoughtful and high — quality user experience," said Peter Lee, General Manager of TCL Communication for global sales and marketing.

"Considering the options of practical use of flexible screens and folding mobile devices, we can distinguish three main challenges: the flexible AMOLED screen itself, the strength and reliability of the case and, of course, the software that should easily adapt to these new formats. Thanks to the vertical integration of TCL and CSOT, we managed to solve many problems of flexible screens. After the announcement of DragonHinge, we can demonstrate how to overcome the difficulties associated with the mechanics of the case, which must be solved in order to support the new format of mobile devices. Now we have a ready-made hardware solution concept that will help us to focus on SOFTWARE development and the functioning of the system as a whole in anticipation of the launch of our first flexible device next year," said Shane Lee, Director General of the TCL Communication global product center.

At the exhibition, TCL Communication showed the first concepts based on DragonHinge technology, and mass production of commercial products is expected in 2020. It is expected that such gadgets will cost less than $ 1000, which is much more affordable than the announced prices for the already presented foldable smartphones.
