The cancellation of the MWC 2020 exhibition did not stop the Japanese manufacturer Sony from presenting the flagship XPERIA 1 II smartphone, which officially reads as the Xperia 1 Mark 2. And this name of the new product was not accidental — the 12-megapixel camera module of the device, according to the company, has a lot in common with Sony Alpha SLR cameras. The gadget's advantages include a 4K-resolution display, a 5G module, and wireless charging.
"In the 5G era, Sony has a unique position in the market thanks to its broad portfolio of technologies," says Mitsuya Kishida, President of Sony Mobile Communications. — The Xperia model with 5G support will take the smartphone experience to a new level."
The Sony Xperia 1 II received a 6.5-inch 4K OLED display with an aspect ratio of 21:9. In addition to high resolution, it is also interesting to support proprietary technology to reduce blur. According to the manufacturer, the smoothness of animation due to its application is similar to displays at 90 Hz. The new product is based on the Snapdragon 865 platform with a Qualcomm X55 5G modem. The device is equipped with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal memory, a 4000 mAh battery with support for fast wired (up to 21 W) and wireless (up to 15 W) charging.
On the back of the device, the main camera is located, which is represented by three 12 MP (f/2.2) sensors with wide-angle lenses, 12 MP (f/1.7) with two-phase autofocus and a focal length of 24 mm and 12 MP (f/2.4) acting as a telephoto a lens with a focal length of 70 millimeters and the possibility of 2x zoom. All cameras are equipped with Zeiss lenses. Additionally, a time-of-flight sensor is installed on the main camera unit. The resolution of the front camera, located on the classic inactive rectangular area, is 8 megapixels.
Sony representatives focused on a unique algorithm for automatic focusing and tracking, which reads information about an object at a frequency of 60 times per second. This ensures that dynamic photos are taken with maximum sharpness. The uniqueness of the Sony Xperia 1 II camera is that today it is the only mobile sensor that can shoot two frames per second with autofocus and auto-exposure. Considering that the company is positioning this model as a mobile alternative to Sony Alpha SLR cameras, the regular “Camera” application has a special Photo Pro mode, which duplicates the controls for “professional” cameras.
"The entire quarter-century partnership between Zeiss and Sony is focused on developing new products for digital image processing. We offer users new techniques and opportunities for photography. By applying our technology and experience in the field of optics and electronics, as well as our desire to create innovative values, we help users Express their creativity — " says Shigeki Ishizuka, senior Executive Vice President, electronics and business solutions at Sony Corporation. "By expanding our strategic collaboration, we intend to offer new opportunities for taking photos on smartphones."
Sony plans to develop a Pro version of the Xperia 1 II. The smartphone will be designed for use by professional videographers and reporters, for whom the priority remains the ability to broadcast live video over 5G networks. In addition, the smartphone will be equipped with an HDMI D port for connecting to professional cameras and other equipment. Sony has not yet announced the price and release date for this model. The standard version of the Xperia 1 II is capable of shooting 4K video with a frame rate of up to 60 fps and up to 120 fps in 2K mode.
"The joint project launched by Sony and Zeiss in 1996 has now become a powerful partnership with a clear mission: to set new standards in digital photography. Both of our companies share a deep passion for photography, as well as a desire to create and anticipate new technologies. Zeiss introduces key technologies for next-level cameras in smartphones, drawing inspiration from the idea of expanding the boundaries of the possible and from our unique experience in creating optics accumulated over our more than 170-year history, " says Joerg Schmitz, head of Zeiss Consumer Products. "Overcoming barriers and striving for new achievements is what motivates us to create new technologies for cameras in smartphones together with Sony."
