  • Smartphone Purism Librem 5 will work on a secure version of Linux


    Today, only two platforms — iOS and Android are leading in the market of mobile operating systems. Purism company plans to make a variety by introducing a smartphone on Linux. Characteristics of the gadget, which should appear in the third quarter, finally published on the network.

    Librem 5

    The main feature of the smartphone Librem 5 is considered a high level of privacy and security. The main platform of the gadget will be PureOS, which uses the Debian package base and offers a gnome Shell interface adapted for a small display and touch control. At the software level, it is possible to completely turn off the microphone, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or camera for maximum security.

    As a display, the developers plan to use a 5.7-inch matrix with a resolution of 1440x720 pixels. The smartphone will have two cameras: an 8-megapixel front sensor and a 13-megapixel main sensor.

    The device performance will be responsible for Quad-core i.MX8M running at 1.5 GHz. Vivante graphics accelerator supports Vulkan, OpenCL 1.2 and OpenGL/ES 3.1. The smartphone will receive 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory with the possibility of expansion through a microSD card.

    Librem 5

    The Librem 5 smartphone will only work with one SIM card. The capacity of the built-in battery will be 3500 mAh. As the port is used to connect USB Type-C. the cost of the gadget so far is $649, but the developers are planning to raise the price to $699. Deliveries of the device are scheduled for the third quarter of 2019, but so far the company has not even shown a prototype smartphone.
