  • Snapdragon 7 nm, 5g-xiaomi smartphone, arm for laptops: Qualcomm showed new items 2019

Every December Qualcomm presents new flagship processors and other developments. This year, the technology was just a breakthrough!

Snapdragon 855: 7 nanometer and 60% more powerful

In Snapdragon 855 Qualcomm switched to the use of advanced 7-nm process technology. As a result, devices based on this chipset will differ not only with increased power but also with improved energy efficiency and less heating. In comparison with Snapdragon 845 processor performance increased by 45%, and the graphics accelerator - by 20% (its detailed specifications can be found in our material).

The new mobile platform has received hardware-level support for Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor built-in fingerprint scanner. Such a sensor is much more reliable and more accurate than the optical sensors currently used in smartphones.

Smartphones based on Snapdragon 855 will be able to automatically improve photos taken with a lack of lighting, adjust the autofocus, and post-processing of finished frames without any delay.

For the first time, mobile gadgets received support for extended dynamic range HDR10+ when playing and recording video.

Snapdragon Elite Gaming: better graphics, lower power consumption in games

Another important feature Snapdragon 855 — support new technology Snapdragon Elite Gaming. With it, games, especially multiplayer, will go much smoother by reducing frame loss to 90% and optimizing the use of Internet traffic. In addition, this technology reduces energy consumption by 20%, which is especially important for mobile gamers. Qualcomm also promises even more beautiful graphics in mobile games, HDR support, and cinematic post-processing.

Snapdragon 855 in smartphones: so far only Xiaomi

Several prototypes of smartphones based on Snapdragon 855 were presented at Snapdragon Tech Summit. But the device ready for commercial launch was demonstrated only by Xiaomi, showing the flagship Mi Mix 3 with 5g support. But the timing of its release and the cost was not reported.

    7 nm1.jpg

Also at the summit, the General Director of OnePlus Pete Lau spoke about the development of a new 5g smartphone based on Snapdragon 855. Such a gadget, as Lau notes, will cost $200-300 more than their existing models.

    Artificial intelligence and augmented reality

Qualcomm paid attention to artificial intelligence and augmented reality technologies. In Snapdragon 855 uses a block of neural computing of the fourth generation, the performance of which has increased three times in comparison with its predecessor, and in comparison with competitors declared a twofold increase. For example, the delay in recognizing a page of text through the camera using Google Lens has decreased by three times, and the power consumption has decreased by 3.7 times.

    7 nm2.jpg

The use of artificial intelligence allows during video recording to include background blur, as on professional cameras. Or even replace the background-all this happens directly on the device, not on remote servers, as it is implemented in various applications. In addition, Snapdragon 855 supports accurate facial recognition at the hardware level.

    7 nm3.jpg

Devices based on Snapdragon 855 will receive a significant increase in capabilities when working with augmented and virtual reality due to hardware acceleration. Smartphones will be able to better recognize objects in the frame with the provision of useful information about them and will more naturally display virtual things in the real world.

    Fifth-generation networks: up to 1.5 Gbit/s

Snapdragon 855 will be the first Qualcomm mobile platform to use a fifth-generation X50 modem. During a demonstration of the work of the modem, connection speeds were up to 1.5 GB/s. This is enough even for streaming video at a resolution of 8K. In addition to the increased speed of data transmission in the networks of the fifth generation of the signal passes through obstacles, including walls of the houses. This is due to the fact that the new standard operates in the millimeter range.

    7 nm4.jpg

It is expected that the commercial launch of 5G, which is scheduled for 2019, will accelerate the spread of the Internet of things, self-driving cars, and smart city systems.  The new standard provides low latency, which is very important for smart devices.

Snapdragon 8cx: ARM processor specifically for laptops

    7 nm5.jpg

Two years ago, Qualcomm's first shared plans to release a Windows-laptops on the Snapdragon processor is Always Connected PC. For these mobile computers offered a "smartphone" chip 835-th line. But laptops with conventional mobile processors were released only a few models from a couple of manufacturers. And this year, Qualcomm introduced the world's first processor made specifically for devices Always Connected PC, Snapdragon 8cx. This chipset, also made by 7-nm process technology, has become the most powerful in the history of the company. Compared to the Snapdragon 850, its performance has doubled and energy efficiency has improved by 60%. In terms of power, it is comparable to the Intel Core u series processors, which are used in many laptops and 2-in-1 devices.

The key advantage of Qualcomm ARM chips over x86 processors is significantly lower power consumption. According to the company, mobile computers based on Snapdragon 8cx in some scenarios will be able to work up to 25 hours without recharging.

    7 nm6.jpg

Also during the presentation, Qualcomm announced that Windows computers with Snapdragon 8cx processor will support many popular applications and services, including the Office Suite from Microsoft, Netflix, Spotify, VLC, Firefox, and many others.

The first computers based on Qualcomm 8cx are expected to appear this year.

The top mobile chipset Snapdragon 855 received not only 5G-modem and improvements in the field of AI computing. One of the key features of the new product was a significantly increased performance of the graphics component of the platform. Representatives of Qualcomm spoke in detail about the innovations that expanded the gaming capabilities of Android devices based on the new processor.

Graphics accelerator Adreno 640 was 20% faster than its counterpart in the composition of the Snapdragon platform 845. Updating the hardware component of the chipset significantly accelerated the loading of games on mobile devices. In addition, the Snapdragon 855 architecture allows virtual and augmented reality games to function with 6 degrees of freedom to enhance the gaming experience of users.
Increased performance in these applications is made possible by distributing the workload between the GPU, the Hexagon auxiliary processor, and the image processing unit (ISP).

One of the main chips of the chipset was Snapdragon Elite Gaming technology. Qualcomm's hardware and software package includes support for the Vulkan 1.1 graphics library, which provides applications with the ability to directly control GPU operations without "crutches" in the form of third-party drivers.
As a result, the loss of frames in mobile games can be reduced by 90%, making the picture much smoother. Especially noticeable performance improvement will be in multiplayer games.

Another advantage of the Vulcan API is high energy efficiency. Compared to the software interface OpenGL achieved 20 percent savings in battery consumption of flagship smartphones based on the new Snapdragon.

Thanks to the function of physically correct rendering (PBR), the interaction of light with surfaces in gaming applications looks as natural as possible. This technology is already used in PC-releases — with its introduction to the mobile market should expect a significant expansion of the list of ported to Android game hits.

The computing power of the platform is enough to run games with HDR support and cinematic image post-processing. Representatives of the company compared modern smartphones with the traditional monitors-the picture quality of actual mobile displays is not inferior to many desktop solutions. If necessary, the image from the mobile device can be displayed on the external screen even in 4K resolution.

An important component of online releases is connection stability. Snapdragon Elite Gaming technology includes a built-in quality of service (QoS) system that prioritizes game packages, preventing third-party applications from "pulling" traffic to themselves.

The sound component is also of paramount importance in games, especially in multiplayer shooters. The latest version of the Qualcomm AptX codec guarantees high sound quality with a minimal delay even when using Bluetooth headphones. For the quality of the signal is a proprietary Qualcomm DAC Aquatic with features surround sound and noise reduction.
The energy efficiency of the new platform has also improved significantly. Despite the increase in graphics power, the device based on Snapdragon 855 is able to work longer on a single battery charge than its predecessor.

The emergence of new gaming smartphones with support for Snapdragon Elite Gaming technology is expected in 2019 with the beginning of commercial deliveries of Snapdragon 855.

The increasingly popular startup SiFive, which is developing a new architecture for processors based on the RISC-V open source Suite, has received a large investment from Qualcomm. Today it is one of the main competitors of ARM — the largest developer of RISC-processors.

During the last round of financing SiFive managed to attract 65.4 million dollars of investment. In total, the startup has already invested about 125 million dollars. Among the largest investors are Samsung, Intel, Western Digital and others, and now Qualcomm has joined this list.
At the moment, RISC-V chips are mainly used in IOT devices and wearable electronics. Thus in SiFive note that now there is an increased demand for developing new products and designing in a cloud environment. Because of this, the load within the company is so high that it simply does not have enough employees. Over the past year and a half, SiFive's staff has grown from 40 people to more than 400, and plans to hire another 200-300 employees.

The advantage of SiFive is the ability to provide the customer with a custom chipset within a few weeks, and its chips consume less power than analogues from ARM. However, while representatives of the company do not talk about plans to develop processors for smartphones.

Soon after the announcement of the updated line of chipsets from Qualcomm, the results of the first testing of new products appeared in the network. Performance "dragons" measured in the popular benchmark AnTuTu and compared their results with the previous generation models.

First place in the top three new products took Snapdragon 730G. The benchmark rated CPU and GPU performance of the gaming chipset at 86,915 and 66,398 points, respectively. Last year's Snapdragon 710 with indicators of 66 584 and 47 736 "parrots" significantly inferior to the new model. Snapdragon 730 without the letters G lagged behind its "charged" modification by 4000 points when testing the processor, and 3000 in terms of the graphics adapter.
Snapdragon 665 unexpectedly lost to its predecessor — despite the difference in the manufacturing process and the release date, Snapdragon 660 ahead of the new model as in the overall standings (742 points 144 vs 125 092), and in some of the individual disciplines. It is possible that this discrepancy is due to the configuration of the test device: according to the specifications, the fresh model of the chipset is nominally superior to its "progenitor".
The appearance of the first commercial devices based on the updated line of Snapdragon processors is expected in the third quarter of 2019.

Qualcomm has announced the latest mobile platform Snapdragon 730. The novelty, made by 8-nm process technology, received two modifications, including a special game version, and advanced functions of the flagship line. At the same time, an updated model of a more affordable series of processors called Snapdragon 665 was presented, which acquired a new graphics core and advanced photo capabilities.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 is a modified version of the sub-flagman mobile platform Snapdragon 710. The novelty was the first Qualcomm processor made by 8-nm process technology. The configuration of clusters has also changed: under the "hood" of the CPU there are two cores ARM Cortex A76 with a clock frequency of 2.2 GHz and six Cortex A55 (1.8 GHz). At the request of the vendor, the performance compared with the predecessor increased by 35%.
The processor works in conjunction with the graphics accelerator Adreno 618, LTE modem X15 and supports the standard wireless connection Wi-Fi 6. Another chip Snapdragon 730 was the latest signal processor Hexagon 688 with a tensor accelerator, which can be used for machine learning. It is reported that the power consumption of the AI processor when performing various tasks decreased four times compared to the previous revision.
Among other features of the new product — image processor Spectra 350, capable of shooting 4K HDR video in portrait mode — for the first time in the line of "seven-hundredth" chipsets. There is also support for the HEIF format to save the internal storage space.
Along with the basic version of the mobile platform was presented and its gaming modification called Snapdragon 730G with increased GPU frequency, increased to 25% gaming performance, the function of Jank Reducer to reduce the loss of frame rate and anti-cheat functions. The "charged" version with the letter G also has the ability to record slow-motion video (960 fps) and support for HDR10-displays with a resolution of 1440p.

I received an update and the 600th series of processors. The 11nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 replaced last year's Snapdragon 660. At the heart of the new product — four cores Kryo 260 (Cortex A73) and four Kryo 260 (Cortex A53) with a clock speed of 2.0 GHz and 1.8 GHz, respectively. The graphics core has been updated from Adreno 512 to Adreno 610 with support for VULKAN 1.1 API and increased energy efficiency by 20%.
The platform also got upgraded Hexagon DSP coprocessors 686 165 and Spectra ISP — latest supports 48-megapixel sensor and triple basic cameras. Snapdragon 665 audio capabilities include support for Qualcomm aptX Audio and Aqstic technologies.
The first devices based on Snapdragon 730, Snapdragon 730G, and Snapdragon 665 processors are expected to appear in the second half of 2019.
