  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 Specifications: Improved performance, faster charging and better sound


    Quite unexpectedly, Qualcomm introduced a new mobile processor Snapdragon 712. This is an updated and more powerful version of last year's Snapdragon 710. The chipset is made by the 10-nm technological process and includes eight computing cores. The company focused on the expansion of multimedia capabilities, implementing improved performance in games, high-quality sound via Bluetooth and support for faster charging.

      Artificial intelligence and augmented reality
      Qualcomm paid attention to artificial intelligence and augmented reality technologies. In Snapdragon 855 uses a block of neural computing of the fourth generation, the performance of which has increased three times in comparison with its predecessor, and in comparison with competitors declared a twofold increase. For example, the delay in recognizing a page of text through the camera using Google Lens has decreased by three times, and the power consumption has decreased by 3.7 times.

      The use of artificial intelligence allows during video recording to include background blur, as on professional cameras. In addition, Snapdragon 855 supports accurate facial recognition at the hardware level.

      Devices based on Snapdragon 855 will receive a significant increase in capabilities when working with augmented and virtual reality due to hardware acceleration. Smartphones will be able to better recognize objects in the frame with the provision of useful information about them and will more naturally display virtual things in the real world.
      Fifth-generation networks: up to 1.5 Gbit/s
      Snapdragon 855 will be the first Qualcomm mobile platform to use a fifth-generation X50 modem. During a demonstration of the work of the modem, connection speeds were up to 1.5 GB/s. This is enough even for streaming video at a resolution of 8K.       Snapdragon 8cx: ARM processor specifically for laptops

      Two years ago, Qualcomm's first shared plans to release a Windows-laptops on the Snapdragon processor is Always Connected PC. For these mobile computers offered a "smartphone" chip 835-th line. But laptops with conventional mobile processors were released only a few models from a couple of manufacturers. And this year, Qualcomm introduced the world's first processor made specifically for devices Always Connected PC, Snapdragon 8cx. This chipset, also made by 7-nm process technology, has become the most powerful in the history of the company. Compared to the Snapdragon 850, its performance has doubled and energy efficiency has improved by 60%.       The key advantage of Qualcomm ARM chips over x86 processors is significantly lower power consumption. According to the company, mobile computers based on Snapdragon 8cx in some scenarios will be able to work up to 25 hours without recharging.

      Also during the presentation, Qualcomm announced that Windows computers with Snapdragon 8cx processor will support many popular applications and services, including the Office Suite from Microsoft, Netflix, Spotify, VLC, Firefox, and many others.
      The first computers based on Qualcomm 8cx are expected to appear this year.

      Qualcomm held an extended presentation of the flagship Snapdragon 855 mobile chipset, which was announced during the first day of the Tech Summit technology conference. The novelty has become the world's first mobile 5g platform with high data transfer speed, advanced artificial intelligence functions, and significantly improved multimedia capabilities.

      The official specifications of the top 7-nm processor confirmed the previously published information. The eight Kryo 485 cores are divided into three clusters: a large 2.84 GHz core, three high-performance (2.42 GHz) cores, and four 1.8 GHz energy-efficient cores. CPU performance increased by 45% compared to Snapdragon 845. Increase the power of GPU Andreno 640 of its predecessor was 20%. Supported memory LPDDR4X with a frequency of 2133 MHz.

      Serious changes had been made to the ability of an artificial intelligence platform. Engine AI Engine 4th generation uses the hardware power of the GPU and the auxiliary processor Hexagon 690. Its overall performance is more than 7 trillion operations per second — three times that of the previous generation.

      The new Qualcomm Spectra 380 image processor uses AI algorithms to classify and track objects in the frame, including motion, both in the real world and in augmented reality applications. Installation of a single camera module with a resolution of 48 MP or dual with sensors of 22 MP is supported. Artificial intelligence is able to improve the image using filters and adjust autofocus, as well as post-processing of finished frames on the fly.
      The advanced voice assistant can cut off echoes and extraneous noise, distinguishing the voice of the device owner even on a busy street or stadium. The computer vision feature enables hardware depth detection when shooting 4K video at 60 frames per second. The user will be able to edit the video directly during its creation — for example, it will be possible to use the bokeh effect or replace the background in the frame of the future movie.

      For the first time for mobile devices support of the HDR10+ standard both for playback and for video recording is declared. Hardware acceleration of decoding and decoding of H. 265 and VP9 will provide high energy efficiency when playing multimedia files. Switching to hardware processing of multimedia files also significantly increases the energy efficiency of the platform.

      Especially for high-resolution content storage, support for the HEIF file format has been implemented, providing up to 50% disk space savings due to high compression efficiency at the best picture quality. Unlike JPEG, HEIF works not only with individual photos but also with groups of images and animated images.

      The platform's wireless capabilities are represented by a 5g Snapdragon X50 modem operating in the 6 GHz and mmWave frequency bands, as well as a 4G Snapdragon X24 module for compatibility with previous-generation networks. The modem has enough bandwidth to handle virtual and augmented reality up to 8K resolution and real-time video processing. The maximum download speed in the 5g coverage area can reach 5 Gbit/s, in LTE networks — up to 2 Gbit / s.

      Snapdragon 855 has received support for Wi-Fi standard 6 ready and MIMO technology for more efficient use of a large number of devices within the range of the access point. It is the first mobile platform to support 802.11a with wireless speeds of up to 10 Gbps with low latency.

      Audio capabilities of the chipset are represented by Qualcomm TrueWireless Stereo Plus technology for wireless headphones, which optimizes signal delay between the right and left channels and reduces power consumption. This will significantly increase the time to listen to music from a single battery charge when using True Wireless devices.

      A separate speech of the company's representatives was devoted to the gaming capabilities of the new platform.
      Currently, Qualcomm is already in talks with vendors. Oneplus CEO Pete Lau confirmed that the company will be the first to release a 5G smartphone early next year. It is expected that mass deliveries of Snapdragon 855 for commercial devices will begin in the first half of 2019.

      The appearance of the first commercial devices based on the updated line of Snapdragon processors is expected in the third quarter of 2019.

      Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 is a modified version of the sub-flagman mobile platform Snapdragon 710. The novelty was the first Qualcomm processor made by 8-nm process technology. The configuration of clusters has also changed: under the "hood" of the CPU there are two cores ARM Cortex A76 with a clock frequency of 2.2 GHz and six Cortex A55 (1.8 GHz). At the request of the vendor, the performance compared with the predecessor increased by 35%.
      The processor works in conjunction with the graphics accelerator Adreno 618, LTE modem X15 and supports the standard wireless connection Wi-Fi 6. Gamers will surely enjoy support for releases with console graphics that reveal the potential of displays with a resolution of QHD+, a refresh rate of 144 Hz and HDR 10. Also, for the first time for smartphones, the graphics core will receive updates directly from Google Play. As with a PC, this will allow you to quickly update your graphics drivers to improve performance.
      New Generation AI

      The performance of the Hexagon 698 neural network processor has increased 4 times (up to 15 TOPS), while its power consumption has decreased by 35%. In order to provide a higher data transfer rate within the system, support for LPDDR5 memory with a frequency of 2750 MHz was added. Phones on Snapdragon 865 can translate speech in real-time, and without using any online services. You can also recognize music in offline mode, instantly apply filters in apps like Snapchat or MSQRD, and do similar impressive tricks.
      5G - yes, but with reservations

      Although the mobile industry is slowly but surely moving towards integrated 5G modems, the Snapdragon 865 (like its predecessor) still requires an external module to work in fifth-generation networks. According to Qualcomm, this scheme will make it easier for smartphone manufacturers to integrate the Snapdragon X55 modem into their devices. Yes, Kirin 990, Exynos 990 and Snapdragon 765 have built-in 5G modems. However, all of them, to put it mildly, do not reach the data transfer rate in X55. Anyway, the Americans vow to release the next generation of the flagship SoC with an integrated modem - and this should happen in a year.
      The main drawback of the external solution is increased power consumption, but Qualcomm deliberately took this step, betting on high performance. The X55 supports the widest possible range of frequencies, and the download/upload speed is 7.6/3 Gbit/s, respectively. However, such indicators can only be achieved in ideal conditions, which are almost impossible to find in real life today.
      New camera features

      The Qualcomm Spectra image processing coprocessor received a reduced clock rate to save power. But at the same time, by processing four pixels per clock cycle instead of one, the performance of the Spectra ISP was increased by 40%. As a result, Snapdragon 865 will allow you to equip smartphones with cameras at 200 MP, shoot 8K videos, create slow-motion clips in 720p at 960 fps without time limits, record video with Dolby Vision HDR and take 64-megapixel photos during video shooting.
