The expedition into space requires designers and engineers to pay attention to every detail. When talking about sending an entire colony, you should consider a number of additional factors, such as providing people with light and heat. Scientists have found that during the colonization of the moon, the satellite itself will help a person to create ideal conditions for living.
Night on the moon lasts up to two weeks. All this time, people need to somehow warm up and illuminate the base. The reserve of solar batteries for such a long period of time may not be enough. In addition, the devices take up too much space to carry them from the Ground. And then come to the aid of the bricks out of moon dust. The European Space Agency, having concluded an agreement with the company Azimut Space, found out that the lunar regolith can be the basis for construction on the moon.
Quote"We used earth rocks, similar in properties to the lunar regolith. By pulverizing them, we have achieved a structure identical to moon dust. Then the bricks were pressed and heated with electric current," says project curator Aidan Cowley about the experiment.
The "charged" brick was placed in a vacuum at a temperature of -150 °C — close to the lunar state — and connected to a heat removal system with a reverse conversion to electricity. The discovery of such accumulator properties of the lunar regolith is encouraging for engineers, allowing them to plan future flights in such a way that the colonists take from the Earth a minimum of construction material and generators, and use the natural capabilities of the moon itself to generate energy.
