The organizers of the Mobile World Congress, the world's largest exhibition of mobile technology, have officially announced that they are canceling the event. MWC 2020 was due to begin on February 24 in Barcelona. The main industry event is held annually and gathers hundreds of thousands of participants and visitors. According to some estimates, the abolition of MWC this year can have far-reaching consequences.
Participating companies spend millions of dollars on rental space, transportation and accommodation of personnel and equipment, and so on. So the cancellation of the Mobile Congress could be a serious financial blow for the GSM Association, the organization that has been holding this exhibition since 2006. Losses can be so widespread that they jeopardize the continued existence of the largest event in the mobile industry.
However, the GSMA decided that public safety is more important.
"Taking care of a safe and healthy environment in Barcelona and the host country as a whole, the GSMA canceled the MWC Barcelona 2020. The concern caused worldwide by the coronavirus outbreak, travel problems and other circumstances make it impossible to hold the event," the organizers said in an official statement.
Earlier, dozens of companies canceled their participation in MWC 2020. These include the world's largest brands - HUAWEI, Sony, Ericsson, HMD, Intel, LG, Nokia, NVIDIA, Facebook, Amazon, NTT Docomo, and others.
