New Pixel 3a and 3a XL have already managed not only to test in all possible ways but also to consider from the inside. Popular specialists portal iFixit has disassembled and carefully studied the "affordable" smartphone from Google. They were found a number of improvements in comparison with older models, received only 4 points out of 10 for maintainability.
Among the key differences between the Pixel 3a XL and the usual Pixel 3 XL is a fully plastic case, no cutout in the screen and the use of a less powerful processor. In the case of normal Pixel 3a and Pixel 3, the list of differences is even smaller. As a result of disassembling the available "pixels" in iFixit noted that they are much easier to work with than with older versions.
The Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL use only standard screws, and most of the components inside are modular, which greatly simplifies the repair and replacement. The most difficult stage in the disassembly is the removal of the display unit, which is glued to the rest of the body. This should be done very carefully, so as not to damage the thin cable. It is also difficult to repair the presence of a large number of thin ribbon cables connecting the internal components, which can be easily damaged.
During the disassembly, it turned out that the new "pixels" use OLED screens from Samsung. However, in the case of a large Pixel 3a XL in some instances may come across a panel from the Chinese company Tianma, but the quality is no different from South Korean.
Despite all the design flaws, Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL got 6 points out of 10 on the maintainability scale.
