During the decline in popularity of tablets, one of the most interesting copies was presented in June Xiaomi MiPad 4. The device turned out to be compact, nimble and, most importantly, affordable. A few months later, without loud announcements, there was its Plus-version: with a display of 10 inches, similar characteristics, and still attractive price tag. It is this model and came to review.
Xiaomi MiPad 4 Plus-version: spot the difference
It should be borne in mind that the devices have almost identical technical characteristics. There are only four differences: the Plus-version has a larger display diagonal (and, accordingly, dimensions and weight), a more capacious battery, a fingerprint sensor and a more advanced version of RAM. Everything else, including screen resolution and MIUI firmware support, is the same. Therefore, taking into account the listed reservations, the Plus-version can draw conclusions about the usual Xiaomi MiPad 4.
The big screen and the eye rejoices
The gadget has got a display of 10.1 inches. Given that the resolution in comparison with the younger model has not changed and still is 1920x1200 points, the PPI decreased from 283 to 224. The frames around the screen are small, so the device is relatively compact — in principle, it can even be held with one hand.
The quality of IPS-matrix is high. The picture is juicy and bright: watching movies or videos from YouTube on this display is comfortable and pleasant. In the dedicated gadget branch of the forum, some users complained about small artifacts near the fingerprint sensor, they say, the image is a little yellow or fading. Perhaps this is the problem of the first batches of devices, and in the test copy of this was not observed.
Stock volume speakers enough to make out the words of the film, when you watch a movie with a noisy family or comfortably listen to music in a large room. The intricacies of the guitar riffs and bass lines, of course, is lost. But in the mess, the music is not transformed, and even at maximum volume, no noise and no suspicious artifacts. By the way, it is possible to output sound to your favorite wired headphones — audio Jack is present.
The tablet is great for watching movies and TV shows or listening to music in the background.
MIUI version of shaman
The official firmware for Xiaomi MiPad 4 both versions is Chinese stable. At the time of writing, a current update to MIUI 10.1 Stable based on Android 8.1 Oreo has arrived for it. The alternative for the original firmware is to unlock the bootloader (which can now take up to two weeks) and install it yourself. If you buy a version of the tablet with a pre-installed Russian language, it will come from China already reflashed to a custom multilingual.
Of course, in the official firmware the basic (and in General any) Google applications are absent as a class, their installation requires separate shamanic rituals. But the pre-installed software is mostly painlessly removed without the need to get root access. The rest is a standard MIUI with all its advantages and disadvantages: it can be customized as you like, but the memory of the device eats well.
The large display has a comfortable work with office documents, as well as with several applications at the same time. Browser and messenger or social network client quite comfortably coexist with each other in split screen mode.
Accuracy above all
Of course, the thin frame around the display look impressive, from the point of view of ergonomics is not all smooth. Due to the thin side frames, holding the device vertically is risky: you can either accidentally tap the screen with your thumb or drop the tablet. Space for a reliable grip is clearly not enough, and rounded edges of security is not added. In horizontal orientation, such problems do not arise. The gadget weighs relatively little-485 grams, so even if you hold it with one hand, it does not get tired for a long time.
The matte metal case is not too dirty, but on the display, prints appear almost instantly. However, as well they are erased due to oleophobic coating.
Unlike the standard MiPad 4, the Plus-version has a fingerprint sensor. It is located on the usual place for tablets-on the front panel next to the display. It is a touch surface that can also function as a Home button if necessary.
The speed and accuracy of the fingerprint sensor are excellent — there is nothing to complain about.
Unlocking by face unlocks MIUI also supports. It is not as effective as fingerprint scanning because it does not function in the dark — the IR sensor is, alas, absent. But in the light of the camera quietly reads the face at any orientation of the device and correctly works in eight to nine cases out of ten.
Moderate autonomy, moderate charging speed
Of course, compared to the standard MiPad 4, the capacity of the built-in battery increased to 8620 mAh instead of 6000. A full charge was enough for 7 hours 21 minutes of continuous video playback in Full HD at maximum brightness with disabled wireless interfaces.
Autonomy only slightly decreased when playing videos from YouTube at maximum volume. In this mode, the tablet is enough for 6-6. 5 hours. Good energy efficiency MiPad 4 Plus showed in games in WoT: Blitz at max speed you can play 6-7 hours on a single charge.
On the forum, some users wrote that the device is charged for a long time — up to 7-8 hours. Probably, the vendor corrected the situation in new batches of devices: it took from 4 to 5 hours to fully charge the test copy from the complete adapter 5 V, 2 A (without Quick Charge support). It is not so critical, but I would like to quickly. On the other hand, more haste less speed: quick charge can greatly wear out the battery.
The intricacies of mobile communications and particularly iron
Forum users reported that MiPad 4 Plus does not support 2G and 3G networks for mobile Internet (voice calls are not supported at all). This information was confirmed-the tablet works only in 4G. And since it is produced primarily for the Chinese market, there is no LTE band 20 support in it. It sounds scary, but actually work 3rd and 7th frequencies, which are used by Russian operators.
After making sure that the appropriate coverage is available in your region, you can safely buy the LTE version of the model-the network is caught well and works steadily.
As for performance, Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 with Adreno 512 accelerator is enough for a comfortable game in WoT: Blitz on medium settings. "Tanks" proved to be quite good even at maximum speed without anisotropic filtering, the fps was steady around 60, although from time to time slipped MicroProse. The device has 4 GB of RAM. But, unlike the 8-inch version with an LPPDDR3, MiPad 4 Plus set fee type LPPDDR4X. Due to this speed on multiple applications in parallel or a bit higher and power consumption is lower.
In the presence of one main camera on the 13 Megapixel frontalka at 5 MP for video calls and chats. It is clear that miracles cannot be expected: the main camera in the tablet is needed first of all for fixing some documents or other useful information, but not for artistic shooting.

Obviously, Xiaomi MiPad 4 Plus is released specifically for those who do not have enough 8-inch display. Also it kind of work on the bugs — the lack of fingerprint scanner in a younger model caused confusion. In General, the device came out perfectly balanced, on a set of characteristics — four plus. Most importantly, don't accidentally drop it (and make it a breeze). And, of course, pleased with the traditionally affordable price of Chinese brand products.
