Taiwanese company VIA, a developer of chipsets for motherboards, has announced the release of its own processor, codenamed CenTaur. The vendor has already presented a working prototype of a proprietary chip, published its technical specifications and spoke about the key advantages of the model.
CenTaur is an x86-compatible eight-core processor with a clock frequency of 2.5 GHz, 16 MB L3 cache, four-channel DDR4-3200 memory interface, and 44 PCI-Express 3.0 lines. The novelty is based on the 16-nm FinFET process technology and supports the AVX-512 instruction set, bypassing AMD solutions based on the Zen 2 architecture in this parameter.
The main feature of the new chip with an area of 195 mm2 was the nCore AI coprocessor for solving machine learning problems. According to the manufacturer, it can handle up to 20 trillion operations per second at a memory bandwidth of 20 TB / s. Thanks to the integrated south bridge, the gadget is a ready-made system on a chip (SoC), compatible with several sockets, the list of which the manufacturer has not yet published.
The new product is positioned as a ready-made solution for video surveillance systems with face recognition function. The timing of the start of deliveries and the price of VIA CenTaur has not yet been announced.
