Samsung management decided to revise the technology of the production of Exynos processors. In particular, the company plans to completely abandon the development of modified ARM-cores Mongoose. Representatives of the Corporation have already told how it will affect the production of branded electronics.
Samsung Research Center, which was engaged in the development of modified processor cores, is located in Texas - now there are about 290 people. In a new statement, the company says that from January 1, 2020, this staff will be disbanded. Samsung spokeswoman Michelle Glaze noted that all employees were previously notified of the impending dismissal and received appropriate compensation. He said the decision would not affect the operation of the manufacturing facility in Austin, which employs about 3,000 people.
Samsung took this step in connection with the desire to ensure the competitiveness of its semiconductor products. Michelle Glaze admits that branded chips are in some ways inferior in performance and energy efficiency solutions from Qualcomm. Therefore, Samsung intends to use the cores developed by ARM, without making modifications to them.
Exynos chipsets also use graphics from ARM, but in the near future Samsung intends to switch to graphics accelerators created in conjunction with AMD.
