The first generation of 3D Sonic sensors debuted on the market as part of the flagship Samsung Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+, and soon the company announced the release of an even more advanced biometric solution.
Qualcomm reported that the second generation ultrasonic fingerprint scanner will differ from its predecessor by a larger working surface area. Its dimensions will be 8x8 mm, while the linear dimensions of the sensor of the first revision-9x4 mm. the Thickness of the module will remain unchanged - at the level of 200 microns (against 3-mm optical solutions). Thanks to the compact design, the new product is suitable for installation even in the thinnest models of gadgets.
The key features of ultrasonic technology are high accuracy of operation. The system recognizes even the wet or soiled finger of the wearer in most cases. In addition, such a detector cannot be fooled by attaching a photo of the skin pattern. According to the company, the new version of 3D Sonic will additionally feature a heart rate monitor.
The official representative of the company Gordon Thomas noted that the design of the new scanner will consist of three elements: ASIC (specialized integrated circuit), the connecting loop and the sensor itself. The main layer of the sensor uses a glass layer, which simultaneously serves as the substrate of the chip. In addition, the new module does not use silicon, which makes it cheaper and easier to manufacture.
The beginning of deliveries of the new product is planned for the second half of 2019-it is possible that the second generation of 3D Sonic sensor will receive its implementation as part of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and OnePlus 7.
