At the upcoming consumer electronics show CES 2020, Intel plans to introduce a proprietary cooling system for laptops. According to network sources, its efficiency will be 25-30% higher than that of most solutions on the market, while vendors will be able to abandon the fans and simultaneously reduce the thickness of the devices.
The design of the cooling system was developed as part of the Intel Athena project. It provides a combination of steam chambers and graphite partitions. Usually, manufacturers place the CPU and graphics accelerator cooling system between the keyboard and the bottom of the case, but Intel has changed the concept of the thermal module.
The main scattering area will be placed behind the display and will be represented by a graphite sheet. Thus, the company plans to significantly increase the area of the radiator for heat dissipation. The design also requires a revision of the mechanism of operation and the location of the display loops, since they should not interfere with the thermal conductivity.
Intel is confident that the new design will allow laptop manufacturers to completely abandon the fans and reduce the thickness of the gadgets. The prototypes of the company’s cooling system with irregular-shaped steam chambers are designed for laptops, the amplitude of the cover opening of which does not exceed 180 °. Solutions for the category of "transformers" with a 360-degree rotary mechanism, the vendor plans to submit later.
