Modern smartphones are increasingly equipped with built-in fingerprint scanners, but this solution can be found only in devices with OLED displays, the cost of which is higher than that of LCD counterparts. But soon the situation may change — today Chinese engineers announced the completion of the development of technology that will provide an advanced unlock system even budget gadgets with IPS-matrices.
Previously, the choice of OLED screens to install a biometric sensor was associated with their ability to transmit light, which allowed to "photograph" a fingerprint directly through the display module. Today, Fortsense announced that it has successfully developed an optical sensor for LCD panels. According to the engineers, they managed to significantly improve the design of the sensor by changing the backlight scheme of the LCD screen.
The company also spoke about the use of a special algorithm based on the neural network with deep learning functions to optimize the data and fast fingerprint recognition. It is reported that the speed of operation of the sensor of the new type is comparable with the current solutions of competitors.
The exact date of mass production of new scanners, the company has not reported — presumably as part of smartphones with IPS-displays novelty will debut in 2020.
