Throughout the history of the automotive industry, the wiper has remained one of the few parts that have not undergone significant changes since the invention. Rubber brushes that brush away raindrops and wet snow from glass have become a familiar feature even for the latest electric cars - but Tesla intends to change the usual way of things.
The US Patent Office has published a document that describes the new technology owned by Tesla. The company offers a new type of windshield cleaner based on laser emitters. It is expected that it will deal with pollution much more effectively than traditional counterparts. The company called the mechanism of the device “pulsed laser cleaning” - a series of pulses will focus on dirt, bird droppings, and insects, “scraping” them from the glass without the use of washing liquid.
The document contains a description of the technical features of the mechanism. In particular, a method is indicated for preventing the impulses of the cleaner from entering the passenger compartment and passers-by. For this, the device will undergo a thorough calibration, restricting the penetration of the laser beam into the glass surface.
In the future, such a system can be used not only in cars but also on solar farms, the panels of which require periodic maintenance. While the development is available only in the form of drawings - whether the company plans to implement it, it is unknown.
