Aston Martin company, known for the release of sports cars, officially presented in Shanghai its first electric car Rapide E, which was announced in 2015. It has a 610 horsepower engine capable of accelerating cars up to 250 km/h, and a battery with a capacity of 65 kW/h, the charge of which is enough for 300 kilometers. The electric car will be released in a limited series.
The reduced cooling requirements of the machine and the lack of an exhaust system allowed Aston Martin engineers to redesign the floor design, making it completely flat to optimize airflow from the front splitter to the large rear diffuser. In Rapide E main attention was devoted to air efficiency. Forged aluminum aerodynamic wheels, fitted with custom Pirelli P-Zero tires with low rolling resistance, have been created from the ground up to provide greater efficiency without sacrificing brake performance. According to the manufacturer, all these changes have improved the aerodynamic efficiency of Rapide E by 8% compared to the previous gasoline model.
Instead of the outdated analog displays, Rapide E has a 10-inch digital screen that provides the driver with all the information he needs: battery power, engine power level, real-time power consumption, etc. in Addition, engineers have used carbon fiber and carbon fiber wherever possible to minimize the weight of the car.
Two electric motors with a total power of 612 HP and a torque of 950 Nm are installed on the rear axle, which is even more in comparison with the top Rapide AMR. The electric car can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds — 0.2 seconds faster compared to the same Rapide AMR. The driver will be able to switch between three driving modes (GT, Sport, and Sport+), which will change the settings of the powerplant and chassis.
In Rapide E, a 65 kWh battery consisting of more than 5,600 lithium-ion cylindrical elements is installed in place of the 6-liter V12 engine, fuel tank, and gearbox. From a full charge, the electric car is able to travel up to 300 kilometers. After 30 minutes of charging from 400V and 50kW power station, it is able to drive 149km, and after half an hour of charging at 800V and 100+ kW power station, the power reserve is increased by 250km.
Rapide E will be released in a limited edition of only 155 copies. The first buyers will receive their cars before the end of the year. The price of the new item has not been announced yet.
