China is actively building up its territories with factories, houses, and roads. The pace of construction is simply amazing: in a week the Chinese are building more roads than we do in a year!
But China has gone further and is building an entire empty city! Almost no one lives in them, although they have all the necessary infrastructure for housing. What for? And why do the Chinese keep building uninhabited cities? We’ll talk about this!
For many years, China has been building new cities, and many remain unpopulated to this day.
The most famous empty cities
In China, there are more than 60 million new apartment buildings that are built with the latest technology and have developed infrastructure. On these premises, you can place residents of several countries at once! And here is just a small list of famous empty cities:
The most famous ghost town in the world. In the vicinity of the city, there are a large number of minerals. This city was not populated. However, real estate here is being bought up already at the construction stage. That's just the Chinese who do not particularly want to move there.
In a city that was supposed to hold hundreds of thousands and millions of people, very, very few people live.
A fairly large city that can accommodate more than a million inhabitants. It was assumed that the city would become a zone intended for the urbanization of peasants from nearby villages. However, something went wrong: only 30 thousand people live there, and Kangbashi looks menacingly empty ...
It is located in the suburbs of Guangzhou, but it is far from known for this: in Tianduchen there are copies of many Parisian sights, including a copy of the Eiffel Tower! And although the city was designed for 10 thousand people, it is populated by only 20%. But at least it attracts tourists.
On the right is the original, on the left is a copy. Would you notice the difference if you did not know this?
This city, located near Shanghai, one of the largest metropolitan areas of China, was to become the "new Hong Kong", a major trading port and tourist center. But it turns out it is weak: until recently, the city was almost uninhabited.
The Chinese leadership has decided to settle the city at any cost, created many universities there. Now more than 100 thousand students live and study in New Nanhui. Whether the city will become prosperous or will remain a large University campus - we will know in a few years.
Another tourist city, but now made in the style of England: beautiful houses no higher than 3 floors. 10 thousand inhabitants were supposed to live here, but you can only meet tourists: Thames Town has become a favorite place for photoshoots among Chinese, Europeans, and Americans.
So why is China building empty cities?
The most obvious reason (who would have thought!)- to settle people there:) But there are other, much more hidden reasons and goals.
For example, this is how wealthy Chinese invest their savings. You can’t buy all the gold in the world, but to build a house is enough.
However, the question is: why? Nobody is going to give apartments for free in China, and buying and renting in such cities is too expensive, which is why many Chinese people come, live a couple of years and go back.
Most likely, the Chinese government also artificially supports GDP growth by creating similar cities. But these cities are cared for, there are janitors, street cleaners, numerous equipment working every day.
What will happen when local authorities cannot support their work? And again: is it worth it to spend so much money on maintaining something that may never come in handy?
Also, ghost towns can be built for the army, so that in case of war the soldiers have a place to settle, and also to supply them directly from these cities.
Well, one of the “longest” ideas: because of global warming, strong climate changes can begin, which will cause many people to suffer. China will favorably accept these refugees and place them in cities ready for this. Economic growth and a lot of labor provided!
For what purpose empty cities are actually being created, we do not yet know. But do not forget that huge amounts of money were spent on their construction. And this means that the fact that they are empty is just a matter of time.
